Fixed Deposit:

In deposit terminology, the term Fixed Deposit refers to a savings account or certificate of deposit that pays a fixed rate of interest until a given maturity date. Funds placed in a FixedDeposit usually cannot be withdrawn prior to maturity or they can perhaps only be withdrawn with advanced notice and/or by having a penalty assessed. It is considered as one the safest avenue for investments.



IPO/FPO

The first sale of stock by a private company to the public. IPOs are often issued by smaller, younger companies seeking the capital to expand, but can also be done by large privately owned companies looking to become publicly traded on the stock exchanges.

In an IPO, the issuer obtains the assistance of an underwriting firm, which helps it determine what type of security to issue (common or preferred), the bestoffering price and the time to bring it to market.

Also referred to as a "publicoffering."



Bonds:

A debt investment in which an investor loans money to an entity (corporate orgovernmental) that borrows the funds for a defined period of time at a fixed interest rate. Bonds are used by companies, municipalities, states andforeign governments to finance a variety of projects and activities.


Debentures:

A type of debt instrument that is not secured by physical assets or collateral. Debentures are backed only by the general creditworthiness and reputation of the issuer. Both corporations and governments frequently issue this type ofbond in order to secure capital. Like other types of bonds, debentures are documented in an indenture.

Mutual Fund:

An investment vehicle that is made up of a pool of funds collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in securities such as stocks, bonds, money market instruments and similar assets. Mutual funds are operated by money managers, who invest the funds capital and attempt to produce capital gains and income for the funds investors. A mutual funds portfolio is structured and maintained to match the investment objectives stated in its prospectus.

Insurance:

A protection against the loss of income that would result if the insured passed away. The named beneficiary receives the proceeds and is thereby safeguarded from the financial impact of the death of the insured.

Mediclaim:

A type of insurance coverage that pays for medical and surgical expenses that are incurred by the insured. Mediclaim can either reimburse the insured for expenses incurred from illness or injury or pay the care provider directly. Mediclaim is often included in employer benefit packages as a means of enticing quality employees.

The cost of mediclaim premiums is deductible to the payer, and benefits received are tax-free. Mediclaim has many cousins, such as disability insurance, critical (catastophic) illness insurance and long-term care (LTC) insurance.
